Every once in a while, a project comes through that perfectly captures what thoughtful design should feel like. This week’s Design of the Week winner does exactly that—blending architecture, landscape, water, and light into a seamless experience that feels calm, intentional, and timeless.

This Japanese-inspired garden retreat was designed to slow you down the moment you enter.

A Cohesive Vision from Inside to Out

From the interior tea room to the surrounding landscape, this project was designed as a single, unified experience. Sliding shoji-style panels frame intentional views outward, creating a strong visual connection between interior living space and the garden beyond.

Tatami flooring, low-profile furnishings, and warm wood tones reinforce simplicity and balance—letting light, shadow, and texture do the heavy lifting. This isn’t just a backyard. It’s a destination.

Layered Outdoor Spaces That Feel Intentional

Outside, the design unfolds in layers:

  • A tranquil water feature with cascading stone weirs provides movement and sound
  • Carefully placed boulders and stepping stones guide circulation organically
  • Sculpted plant forms and bamboo screening create privacy without enclosure
  • A striking torii gate structure anchors a quiet lounge area, adding cultural depth and architectural interest

Each space feels distinct, yet connected—allowing the homeowner to move through the garden at different paces depending on the moment.

Lighting That Transforms the Space After Dark

As daylight fades, the project truly comes alive.

Soft uplighting highlights trees and stone elements, while subtle path lighting guides movement without overpowering the natural atmosphere. Water features glow gently at night, reinforcing the calming rhythm of the space and extending usability well beyond sunset.

This is a perfect example of how intentional lighting design elevates both aesthetics and function.

Designed to Inspire, Built to Perform

At Your Haven Design, we focus on creating designs that don’t just look beautiful, but help contractors sell confidently and build accurately. Projects like this show what’s possible when vision, process, and execution align.

This Design of the Week winner is a reminder that great outdoor spaces aren’t about adding more, they’re about designing better.
